<image:title>Concerts - Louis Lortie, piano - The phenomenal Canadian pianist Louis Lortie returns to Music Toronto with a compelling program devoted to the piano ballade. Popularized in the 19th century, the piano ballade is a single-movement form often shaped by a sweeping dramatic arc. Remarkably flexible in structure and character, it offers profound emotional range, from intimacy and lyricism to turbulence and grandeur. Though united by genre, each work reveals a distinct voice, and in Mr. Lortie’s hands the depth, colour, and expressive power of these masterpieces promise to captivate and astonish. Mr. Lortie enjoys an extraordinary international reputation as both recitalist and concerto soloist, performing with leading orchestras and in major concert halls around the world. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience his commanding artistry up close in the intimacy and superb acoustics of the Jane Mallett Theatre.</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - Leonkoro Quartet - Since its formation in Berlin in 2019, the Leonkoro Quartet has won more awards and been bestowed more honours than any other group of its generation. Bookended by the Schwartz brothers playing first violin and ‘cello, the group takes its name from “Leon” and “koro” - the Esperanto words that together form “Lionheart”. The name also references the children’s book of the same name by Astrid Lundgren, which features a pair of brothers (not coincidently) who are brave and courageous. In the relatively brief time they have been together, they have emerged as a group not only technically supreme and courageous in their embrace of artistic risk, but also as one particularly attuned to the unique sonority and sound world of each piece they approach. This is music making made on the edge of the seat, vibrant and engaged from beginning to end.</image:title>

<image:caption>Frequent musical companions, Steven Isserlis and Connie Shih are both internationally renowned soloists and chamber musicians. Their collaborations have thrilled audiences at Wigmore and Carnegie Halls, amongst many others. Mr. Isserlis’s reputation goes beyond performing: he has created texts for children’s works, is a keen champion of new music as well as authentic performance, and also has a career as a broadcaster and writer. In a beautifully crafted program that is reflective of his broad interests, of particular note is the Ritournelle of the little-known Czech composer Vitezslava Kaprálová, whose life and promising career was sadly cut short at the age of 25. It is paired here with what will undoubtedly be memorable performances of some of the gems of the cello/piano duo repertoire. COSE pre-concert 6:30 pm, Eric Guo, piano Top prize winner at the 2023 Chopin Competition on Period Instruments, pianist Eric Guo has been invited to perform at some of today’s most prestigious international festivals, including Chopin and his Europe (Poland), Duszniki (Poland), Nohant (France), Dvorak Prague (Czech), Bolzano Bozen (Italy), Frost Chopin (Miami), Rockport Chamber Music, Paderewski Festival (Raleigh). Eric was named one of CBC’s 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30, and recipient of Hnatyshyn Foundation Grant in Piano. His debut album, released by the Chopin Institute, received rave reviews from many musical journals, including Gramophone (UK), and has been broadcasted on CBC and Radio-Canada.</image:caption>

Now based in Waterloo, Ontario where they have been Quartet-in-Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University since 1991, The Penderecki String Quartet has become one of the most celebrated chamber ensembles of their generation. The four Penderecki musicians (now originating from Poland, Canada, and USA) bring their varied yet collective experience to create performances that demonstrate their “remarkable range of technical excellence and emotional sweep” (Toronto, Globe and Mail).</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - Gryphon Trio with Nordic Voices - 7:30 pm - The Gryphon Trio reunites with Norway’s extraordinary vocal sextet, Nordic Voices, for an evening shaped by friendship, collaboration, and the power of newly created music. The program brings together four major works we have commissioned in recent years: Omaa Biindig by Cree composer Andrew Balfour, Dal by Polish composer Norbert Palej, Scar Tissue by Canadian composer Jeffrey Ryan, and Will Sing Life Again by Ukrainian composer Bohdana Frolyak. Andrew Balfour’s Omaa Biindig, setting texts in Ojibway and Norwegian, unfolds as a ritual journey through the directions—North, South, East, and West—along with Water and Earth, before turning toward the direction we too often neglect: inward, toward the self. Bohdana Frolyak’s Will Sing Life Again, is a setting of Poem about a Crow by Ukrainian writer and war journalist Viktoria Amelina, who was killed in 2023 while documenting the war in Ukraine. Premiered last summer in Norway, the work unfolds with quiet intensity, giving musical voice to Amelina’s spare and haunting text—a poem shaped by witness, vulnerability, and the fragile persistence of life amid devastation. The world premiere of Norbert Palej’s DAL draws on poetry by Tadeusz Miciński, Juliusz Słowacki, and Stanisław Wyspiański, weaving voices from Poland’s literary past into a folk-inflected contemporary musical landscape. The evening concludes with Jeffrey Ryan’s Scar Tissue, which sets commissioned poetry by Giller Prize–winning author and poet Michael Redhill—a powerful reflection on memory, fracture, and the marks history leaves upon us.</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - MUSE: J.S. Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow - J.S. Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow is a captivating combination of stories by Tom Allen and music by J.S. Bach, Buxtehude, Sofia Gubaidulina, Rachmaninoff, Gounod, and Tom Waits. Performances by violinist Rebekah Wolkstein, accordionist Michael Bridge, pianist Jamie Parker, harpist Lori Gemmel, and soprano Patricia O’Callaghan. Please note that this presentation will start at 7:30 pm and not at 3:00 pm as previously advertised. This Music TORONTO presentation is the first in a new series of Sunday afternoon concerts called MUSE (Music Unveiled, Stories, Explorations). All MUSE series concerts take place at the Jane Mallett Theatre, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front St. East. About J.S. Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow: with Tom Allen and Friends We typically imagine J.S. Bach as the sage old master and undisputed genius of the 18th century. But in his late teens he was as hot-headed and unruly as he was gifted. Taking temporary leave of his job, he set off, on foot, to hear the master of his age, Dietrich Buxtehude, some 400 km away! This illuminating tapestry of beautiful music and riveting stories brings to life this fascinating chapter in the young Bach’s life.</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - Tetzlaff / Tetzlaff / Doerken Trio - The dynamic and deeply musically connected sibling duo of violinist Christian and ‘cellist Tanja Tetzlaff are joined by the dazzling Kiveli Doerken for an evening of piano trio favourites. The trio was originally formed in 2004 with pianist Lars Vogt; Doerken joined the group after Vogt’s tragically early death from cancer in 2022. She has quickly more than filled the role with her own strengths and sensibilities. This is the Music Toronto audience’s first opportunity to hear this new and wonderful incarnation of the group. In their first season with Doerken, Vladimir Jurowski wrote in The Threepenny Review: “The accord among the three players was perfect; the way they picked up each other’s themes, alternated their trills and pizzicatos, occasionally joined together in unison, and even left a few momentary silences was a pleasure to behold… the entire concert felt moving and triumphant, joyful and sad all at once, just as the best music should be.”</image:title>

Her honours include the Sphinx Medal of Excellence and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. In 2024, she was named the inaugural Christel DeHaan Artistic Partner of the American Piano Awards, responsible for artistic oversight of the competition. Recognized as a leading interpreter of the piano music of African-American/Black composer Florence Price, Cann premiered Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement and won two Grammys in 2023 and 2025 for recordings of Price’s works. A dedicated and versatile performer, Cann has excelled as a chamber musician collaborating with leading artists including the Catalyst, Dover, and Juilliard string quartets, among others. She regularly performs duo piano repertoire with her sister, pianist Kimberly Cann, as the Cann Duo. Embracing a dual role as performer and pedagogue, Cann is frequently invited to teach master classes, give lecture-demonstrations, and lead teaching residencies. Cann holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and an Artist’s Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music. She joined the Curtis piano faculty in 2020 as the inaugural Eleanor Sokoloff Chair in Piano Studies. She is also on the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - Ehnes Quartet - Imagine a “dream-team” lineup of musicians whose performances are even greater than the sum of the considerable parts, and you have the brilliant and internationally acclaimed Ehnes Quartet. Amongst today’s most sought-after chamber ensembles, violinists James Ehnes and Amy Schwartz Moretti, violist Che-Yen Chen, and cellist Edward Arron bring their passion, artistic command, and refinement to Toronto for a one-night, must-hear concert. Although formally established in 2010, the members of the group have performed together in various combinations for decades, leading The Strad to characterize one of their live performances thus: “They meshed together like the old friends they are, themes passing seamlessly, unison writing blending perfectly as solo themes emerged, and the ebb and flow managed beautifully.”</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - Rachel Fenlon - Rachel Fenlon is a soprano and pianist whose artistry brings a fresh perspective to classical music stages worldwide. With a unique blend of singer-songwriter sensibility, Rachel delivers captivating song recitals, often accompanying herself on the piano. Originally trained as an opera singer, Rachel has established herself as an international performer, captivating audiences as a recitalist, solo pianist, singer, and opera performer. Born in the UK and raised on Canada's west coast, Rachel honed her craft at UBC and became a prominent figure in the Vancouver music scene before relocating to Berlin. Experience Schubert's monumental song cycle, Winterreise, in a truly distinctive manner. Conceived as a journey into the depths of winter, this cycle sets a selection of poems by Wilhelm Müller, published in 1823 and 1824, to music. The singer embarks on an introspective dialogue with her own heart, navigating through reflections, inquiries, irony, and ultimately, resignation. She seamlessly drifts between the realm of dreams and the harsh reality of lost love, with the bleak winter serving as a poignant backdrop to her despairing thoughts.</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - COSE pre-concert: Prairie Sons cello/piano 6:30 pm Miró Quartet 7:30 pm - The Miró Quartet stands out in the world of classical music. Formed in 1995, the Miró won both the Banff and Naumberg chamber music competitions, and in 2005 became the first ensemble ever to be awarded the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant. In unforgettable performances, the Miró achieve the chamber music ideal of sounding as if they are only one instrument, the pinnacle of communication and collaboration. The Miró Quartet took its name from the Spanish artist Joan Miró, whose Surrealist works — drawing on the realm of memory, dreams, and imaginative fantasy — are some of the most ground-breaking and admired of the 20th century. COSE pre-concert: Prairie Sons Award winning cellist David Liam Roberts and pianist Godwin Friesen embody the expansive, nuanced perspective of their home landscape in their concert program. These two musicians met at the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School of Music, and recognized a kindred spirit in each other. Both hail from the Prairies, began performing alongside other members of their families, and have been named to CBC’s list of Hot 30 Classical Musicians Under 30. The energy and innovation of the Prairie Sons invites you to take a fresh look at a familiar landscape, and to witness the miracle in the everyday.</image:title>

<image:title>Concerts - Invocations: Gryphon Trio violinist Lara St. John, vocalist Aviva Chernick and friends - Pre-Concert Chat at 6:45pm - Lobby Invocations are calls for help, but they can also be appeals for inspiration and spiritual guidance. Violin virtuoso Lara St. John, soulful singer Aviva Chernick and other guests, join the celebrated Gryphon Trio in a rich musical offering that will resonate with each of us during those vulnerable moments when we, too, seek to invoke something beyond ourselves. One such invocation is the “nign”, a wordless and originally improvised prayer stemming from Hasidic Judaism in the 18thcentury, and the inspiration for several works in the program: Avner Dorman’s Nigunim, recipient of The Azrieli Prize for Jewish Music; a world premiere by James Rolfe, Narrow Bridges; and Aaron Copland’s classic Vitebsk. The program opens with Vivian Fung’s impassioned Prayer, inspired by Hildegard von Bingen, paired with Amy Beach’s spiritual plea Invocation. Violinist Noa Sarid and violist Sheila Jaffé join the Gryphon Trio to close the program with Robert Schumann’s epic and soul-searching Piano Quintet, Op. 44. The Danel is known for its deeply personal interpretations of the string quartet cycles of Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich, and Weinberg, and its lively and fresh vision of traditional quartet repertoire. The Danel has championed the string quartets of Shostakovich and enjoyed rich collaboration with major contemporary composers. The quartet has been artist-in-residence at The University of Manchester since 2005. The Strad recognized in the Danel “a fluent testament to long experience and stylistic command.”</image:title>
